This project was my first with Algorithm and gave me a great opportunity to deliver create a new product that would be used repeatedly going forward to augment live experiences in public spaces.
The issue was that it wasn't suitable nor particularly legal to put large speakers in public spaces and blast music for long periods of time when we had an audio component for an event. What I developed for Rising was an website that would allow you to tune into the audio live through your phone.
What was surprising to me in the early development of this was that livestreaming services such as Twitch and Youtube Live were greatly out of sync compared to the tolerances of what we needed. The show was using lasers to display words on the side of the river as the level rose with the tide and as such the timing of the audio needed to be within at least 100ms or it would have felt very disjointed.
The solution I went for was to use WebRTC and stream the audio over what is usually used as a video chat service. The added benefit was the ability to stream video as well!
